Have you wondered how loud HSR might be? Many video & sound recordings don’t contain any ambient noise to compare to. This one has the sounds of voices of people at a park in Union City. Thanks to Jennifer Pfaff for the recording.

San Mateo City Council Takes on HSR Sept 7th, Sept. 30th Workshop
Hello everyone,
The purpose of this email is to share that the Department of Public Works will be providing an update on High Speed Rail to the City Council on Tuesday, September 7th. (We anticipate sending you another email reminder on Friday, September 3rd after an agenda and administrative report are available online.)
In short, we will update the Council on the potential impacts of new information that is based on progress of any additional engineering work performed by the High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) and new information shared at HSRA board meetings (one held in early August and a near future meeting in early September).
If you are unable to attend the Council meeting on September 7th, you can watch it online at www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.aspx?nid=193, as all council meetings are televised and streamed onto our Web site.
As previously reported via email updates, we will also have a September 30th workshop at the Main Library. We will provide a similar update to the one that will be covered in the September 7th Council meeting along with information related to any possible new developments. A flyer for the September 30th workshop has been posted at www.cityofsanmateo.org/highspeedrail.
We encourage everyone to share our Web address and the posted community flyer with your neighbors.
Thank you. Please let us know if you have any questions. We can be reached at 650.522.7300.

Community Assistance Requested – Robbery Investigation
San Mateo, CA – August 9th, 2010 – 7:55 pm – A victim was seriously physically assaulted and robbed in the area of 16th Ave. and Railroad Ave. The suspect in the assault stole cash from the victim, and fled the area in a vehicle. Officers quickly responded, and combed the area for suspects, evidence and witnesses. An independent eyewitness described the suspect in this case as a Polynesian (Pacific Islander) male in his 30s, 5’9 tall and weighing about 190 lbs. The witness saw the suspect leave the scene in the passenger seat of a dark blue or black 80s vintage subcompact Volkswagen, possibly a Rabbit or GTI. The vehicle had a store-bought “For Sale” sign in the window.
Attached is a artist’s sketch of the suspect, based on witness information:
Suspect: Pacific Islander Male – 30s – 5’9 and about 190 lbs. – Black Hair, Brown Eyes

Personal Safety Tips:
Try to avoid walking alone on the street after 9:00 p.m. If you must walk alone at night, use well-lit roads, with as much car traffic as possible, and walk near the curb. At night, avoid vacant lots, and areas with excessive trees and bushes.
When walking to your car at night, have your keys in your hand and be ready to open the door. If you have to walk in the street, walk facing traffic. A person walking with traffic can be followed, forced into a car, and abducted more easily than a person walking against traffic. Wear clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement, and don’t burden yourself with too many packages or items.
Try to avoid using ATMs late at night. If you must, try to pick an ATM in an attended location, such as a supermarket or mall. At the very least, make sure the ATM is well lit, and be aware of any people “loitering” in the area. Try to avoid going alone.
Don’t carry a purse loosely around your shoulder. Clutch it tightly under your arm or, better yet, avoid carrying a purse and keep a wallet in your pocket instead.
If you are robbed, obey the robber’s instructions. Keeping your cash in a separate money clip or pouch will allow you to hand it over without sacrificing your credit cards, identification, and personal papers. Try to memorize your robber’s physical features, clothing, motor vehicle, and direction of flight. Call the police from the nearest available telephone.

Looks like CSHRA is Planning on Aerial Viaduct in North Central
From the Burlingame Voice article
High Cost Rail – Low Cost Aerial for Burlingame
For more than a year now, Peninsula residents have been criticized by the California High Speed Rail Authority for jumping to the conclusion that the cheapest and ugliest alignment would be foisted on our communities. How could we engage in such “fear-mongering?”
Well, it is now confirmed!
In the Federal Funding Application submitted on Friday, August 6th, the Authority requested the following:
“New infrastructure providing four tracks between Brisbane and Redwood junctions is proposed based on the more economical Aerial Structure cross-section as opposed to the Trench solution in some areas such as Burlingame, San Mateo which would be more expensive (see figure 2).”
My only hope is that this new reality wakes up those in our community who believe it will never happen “because the state can’t afford it” or “legislators would never let this happen.” And our neighboring communities who have taken the tactic of wining and dining with the Rail folks as their strategy to get the best result for their community. Guess that didn’t work – huh?
See below for ARRA application with quoted section above, page 4 of 19:
http://cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/images/chsr/20100806183201_Redefined%20San%20Francisco%20-%20San%20Jose%20Design-Build%20Section%20ARRA%20Track%202%20Scope.pdf
HSR to be on Aerial Viaduct or in Open Trench through North Central and Downtown San Mateo
Today the CAHSRA Supplemental Alternatives Analysis Report was published. It carries forward two alternatives for further consideration in North Central and downtown San Mateo:
Option A — an aerial viaduct (kind of like a freeway structure), or
Option B — an open trench that would pass below street intersections
The option of a tunnel or covered trench has been eliminated from consideration. If you click on the High Speed Rail tab above you will find links to the full Supplemental Alternatives Analysis Report and the Executive Summary.
Once CAHSRA settles this issue of “vertical alignment”, whether the trains will run up in the air or down in a trench, they will take on the “horizontal alignment” or where exactly the the trains will run in the sense of east or west.
HSR Elevated through San Mateo? Meeting Thursday, Report due out Friday
From John Horgan’s column in the San Mateo County Times:
“Evidence continues to mount that deep concerns in San Mateo and Burlingame over how a high-speed rail line may be built there are going to be realized.”
Here’s the link to the full column
There’s a Board meeting for CAHSR on Thursday morning with an agenda item (#7) concerning the vertical alignment on the Peninsula (elevated, at grade, trench/tunnel).
Supplemental Alternatives Analysis Report – San Francisco to San Jose
Staff will describe and make recommendations on the alignment, station, and
maintenance facility alternatives in the San Francisco to San Jose section, and the
Board will have an opportunity to provide direction on the alternatives to carry
forward for further study.
*(the Supplemental Alternatives Analysis report will be posted at www.cahisghspeedrail.ca.gov by
the morning of August 5th)
