School District to lease land next to College Park for Construction Debris? — School board votes to consider tonight!

SMFC school district is considering leasing land next to College Park elementary school to Caltrain to use for their bridge replacement and train track grade raising project for 2 years starting in 2014. The lot has been used in the past as a playfield, but recently has been used by the contractor for College Park on the construction at that school. The result is that piles of dirt, debris and weeds have been sitting there for way too long.

Aside from issues over whether leasing school land for construction stockpiling is appropriate or legal, whether the district has an obligation to maintain a reasonably clean and neighborly appearance on its land in a residential area, and noise during school and nighttime hours — there is a serious health issue that the district need to consider.

The Caltrain project involves work in soils containing naturally occurring asbestos and whatever else may have been deposited along the right of way in the last 100+years. I certainly would not want my child playing in a yard next to debris from that project. And we know that we are a windy place, anyone living, walking, or driving downwind would be subject to dust blowing off the site as well.

Please consider attending the school board meeting tonight or contacting the district to express your concern over this proposal.

Meeting starts at  7pm at the District Offices at 1170 Chess Drive, Foster City
